Recently 5th & 6th Class of Rusheen N.S. have been working on a number of projects for “The Our World Irish Aid Awards 2017”. During the last number of weeks we have studied all about Ireland’s 8 partnering Countrys involved in “Irish Aid” such as Zambia, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Malawi,Vietnam, Uganda, Tanzania and Mozambique. We learned information from “Google”, “Irish Aid” website and our “Irish Aid” Magazine.
In our project we compared the lives of Moira and Clodagh from Ireland to the life of “Grace” who lives in Malawi. We also compared the Irish Primary School to the Senga Bay Primary School.
We got an interview from Victor Moyo who was born and raised in Senga Bay, Malawi. Victor Moyo told us what life is like in Senga Bay and he told us that the children have to get up at 5:00a.m. in the morning because their school starts at 7:00a.m. It takes 2 hours to walk to school and if you were at school late you would get a severe punishment.
Victor also told us that electricity is very expensive in Malawi and few families have it, so we decided to do something to help. Julian O’Leary had told us all about Village Boom Solar Lamps powered by the sun. We held a “Skipathon” recently and raised approximately €826. We have now sent a box of 25 solar powered lamps to Senga Bay Primary School, Malawi. We really enjoyed doing this project.
