As the World Cup 2018 kicked off, Rusheen National School decided to kick off their own World Cup. There were four teams, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Brazil. At the start Brazil were leading the table and following were Spain, Germany and Belgium. In the Semi Finals Germany suffered a one nil defeat to Spain (Goal scored by Noah O’Leary) while Brazil suffered a one nil defeat to Belgium (Goal scored by Séan Cummins). After, Brazil faced Germany in the 3rd place play-off. Both teams played great both scoring goals. (James Twomey for Brazil and Grace Kelleher (sub.) for Germany). After extra time, there was no score so it went to penalties. Both teams did very well in penalties but Brazil just scored one more to grab 3rd place.
The next day Belgium faced Spain in the World Cup Final. It was a very exciting game. First, Mr. Twomey played Champions League Final music as the 2 teams marched around the court proudly while the fans chanted. Then the 2 team’s shook hands as a sign of respect and after, the game was on. Mr. Twomey was the commentator. The 2 teams were fighting and fighting but after a Belgium goal kick and some tackling, Belgium snatched the lead. Spain were fighting and fighting back but then Mr. Coakley the referee blew the whistle for half time. The 2 teams had a talk over. Mr. Twomey talked to the 2 Captains, Noah O’Leary and Liam McSweeney. After, the game was back on again. There was some great game from both sides and some brilliant saves from Belgium keeper Evan O’Riordan and Spain keeper Darragh O’Shea. It was also Evan O’Riordan’s Birthday and he is turning 10. Both sides continued on the great play but the score never changed. Then, the final whistle was blown and Belgium were crowned champions of World Cup Rusheen 2018. Brazil and Germany got medals while Spain and Belgium got trophies.
