ACTIVITY:
Extracting D.N.A. from a Banana
On the 12th of November Cell Explores came to our school and told us about our cells in our body and our D.N.A. Fiona was one of the scientist that came to our school and she did a power point on the white board. She also told us in an average adult there are 100,000,000,000,000(100 Trillion) cells in their body and in a blood drop there are 250 million cells. If you stretch out all the cells in your body (for an average adult), you could reach up to the moon and back 6,000 times. After that we were put into groups of 4 or 5 and then they gave us cool lab coats. Then we were given a see-through bag with a banana inside, after that we squished the banana and then poured saline in the bag and mixed them together. Then we added 1ml of soap. Soon after that we put in red or green food colouring so we could see the banana D.N.A. clearly. To finish we fished out some DNA with a loop and put it in a vial. After we had done all that each group made a replica of a Cell, and it is called a double helix. We really enjoyed the science workshop.
